Back again with Brother Ethex (Part Deux)…

It’s only right that we did a follow-up with the Brother Ethex a.k.a. Gregg Stizzl, as the first part of the interview we did last year we dwelt on his Writin’/Graffiti history, his time growing up in the Boogie Down, the early days of the Roxy club w/ Jazzy Jay on the wheels of steels, and his video cameo on the classic Buffalo Girls joint. On this go-round we get some graff flix and Gregg’s own words on the ‘unsung heroes’ of this thing we call Hip Hop and much more. Step up front..

DJ Blendz/Intro: That DUMP KOCH train pic u sent , who did that one and a quick word or two if u have one?

Brother Ethex: Yes, SPIN did the letters & was nice enough to ask me to do Mayor Koch. That’s why I sent that to you. SPIN by the way is one of the greats. A lot of times we will go out with some of our favorite writers to go write with and SPIN was definitely one of them, and he asked me to do the KOCH HEAD that he tagged with the remaining red fumes…

DUMPKOCH

DJ Blendz: The FuzzUno pic with the kid standing in the front of the train, if you have any words on that pic I’d appreciate it.

Brother Ethex: Yes fuzz one..

As I said before, definitely not only a brilliant writer but absolutely as far as I know the second youngest person to do anything there and he didn’t have the benefit like I. He didn’t know DONDI yet but he did right after that.
He got up totally on his own. Blonde hair, blue eyes went into the yard nervous as could be and at 9 years old, that’s how old he is in that picture, he actually did one of the better pieces seen from many many artists that were 18/20 at the time.

We were writing partners because we were very close in age.

DONDI had mad love for him also, big shout out to all the CIA rock stars. Those that are with us, those that may not be. Rest In Power Crazy Inside Artists, not criminals in action. Although we may have been physically we were artists first and foremost…

Brother Ethex: This piece is by an artist named Baby168, lived obviously a block up from me while I was growing up and I don’t think anybody even is aware that photo is from 1978. It’s just amazing within the graffiti culture, especially New York City graffiti culture, how a great artist can get lost in the shuffle or they might not be willing to do the things others were, such as interviews and the like. Many of us just wanted to write…

baby168

Brother Ethex: I normally would never share this photo. It’s from a gallery show called City As Canvas, that is the actual SAWED STEEL from the side of the car that is the very car that ran the lines that now sits in a museum.

NOC167 Is TDS ‘The Death Squad’ which is a very, very tough crew.. Part, Flite, VULCAN…

Brother Ethex: This photo is from my father’s collection. This is the original Writers Bench, which was always at 149th and Grand Concourse, but what makes this photo exceptional is I think anybody can tell this was in the first month that the Bench was poppin’ for lack of a better term: 1973…

Brother Ethex: I finally felt comfortable enough to share my first car with the world because I always thought people might think it corny that I chose the Oscar Meyer Weiner character, but you know that when your 8 years old that’s what was appealing to me.. the way he danced across the screen during Saturday morning cartoon commercials.

DJ Blendz: Not corny at all, just staying true to who you were and are right now.

Brother Ethex: Amen & absolutely Blendz, that’s exactly who I was. For me to do a character of a gangster toting a gun would be very pretentious at that point because if I saw it I really didn’t grasp it by eight years old.

Brother Ethex: I normally wouldn’t share this but I’ll make an exception for you brother. This is something that I actually took the photo of, I’m very proud of that. Just to see that he’s still active to this day and is amazing on freights, look at that. His work is pristine. LEE & Dondi might tell you they like Zephyr better than their own work..

DJ Blendz: That Rammallzee strip u sent me, he went in (pz.) on Basquiat lol.. what are your thoughts on him (Basquiat)?

Brother Ethex: Who, SAMO??  lol..

My thoughts are exactly as I watched it unfold. It was a straight industry rule number 4080 move.

Fab Five Freddy and Rammellzee the only two individuals, along with Chris Stein of Blondie Fame, who played some instrumentation. Those are the only 3 people that deserved any credit for the record ‘The Chicken Scratch'(Beat Bop??) on the test pressing. If you want me to send you that right now I will. That was a little bit of Mr. Baskets work, may he rest in peace, but he was basically brought to New York City to put a face to a graph. That’s why when people can hang on to something easy to read like Samo handstyles are way too violent their arrows they’re shooting through things they like missiles, shooting through wind tunnels is what Rammellzee would say about a train he would just forget about only intellectualize and he would later apply it to the art that he would do in studio he would sit on DONDI’S floor…

Brother Ethex: SWISS78 Was DONDI, one of many alter-egos. This one just happened to be a 1978 when he chose this. He dropped the whole switch thing after ’78 ended. He was always innovating…

Brother Ethex: I will give you the whole science on behind why I did 7UP for quite a few years..
7 letters in my first name, 7 letters in my last. My real first name is obviously Gregorio, which is Gregory seven letters. I was born in the seventh month on the 14th day which is 7 + 7. I was born in 1968 which is if you add the 6th and the 8th you get 14/2, you get 7. It also happen that my first initial is the seventh letter in the alphabet. Very few people that could claim all that…

Brother Ethex: Fab & DONDI In Germany 1982..

Taken by me, who is always creeping up on people. I’ve always loved photography, as you could probably tell, and this Polaroid is from ’82 during the Wild Style promotional tour. I would not share this photograph with anybody else at this point in my life especially…

Brother Ethex: A Zulu character I did. It’s a RSC/Zulu character with the beads around his neck…

DJ Blendz: Niiice! I can make out Fat Joe and Big L (RIP). Who’s the third guy? I know I’m gonna slap myself for not catching it quick lol.

Brother Ethex: That’s Q-UNIQUE at 14. In my kitchen where I had a board covering the wall because you know every MC wants to write graff at one time or another because it is the only illegal element and it gives it a certain Romanticism so I use to welcome any and all of the MC’s & DJ’s because I was already above, as you know and I know. I would want to write my name up on anybody’s wall. That was fairly well known in the graff community, if they let me LOL…

Brother Ethex: As I told you before there really was a gang called the Riffs like in the Warriors. It was based on a combination of that and the Black Spades so here is one of Riffs early pieces. As you can see it was a very early seventies, ’73…

Brother Ethex: Brother Rasta CIA..

Not his best work by a long shot but considering its from 1976. I have a beautiful mass card that I’ll share with you personally from him. I was blessed to be a pallbearer at the funeral which was very difficult. Your cousin (DURO) was also very close with Rasta…

Brother Ethex/Outro: So here’s a few crews that I think it’s very necessary to shout out other than the obvious RSC. CIA, RTW, TDS, TKA, TNT, United Artist, the soul artists Workshop and you can just say any and all the writers throughout the seventies that are still maintaining and those that went to a better place I’ll see you when I get there which I’m not planning on yet..

Oh, no doubt Pace Won, Prince P.O., Smooth The Hustler, PHADE, & Shabaam Sahdeeq..

Few others that’s all..

  1. Thank You so much Blendz, your a Gentleman.
Your approach, &vast knowledge in the actions/&abstract along with your ability to intellectualize what is so unfortunately very foreign to others no matter how thorough the “translator”, sets you apart.
